Roberts brings excitement to bowling lanes

OTTUMWA — Win or lose, when Ottumwa senior bowler Anthony Roberts is involved it’s bound to be fun.

Roberts never misses a chance to give a teammate a high five. Or to let loose with a celebratory yell after a strike. Or to offer congratulatory words to a fellow Bulldog. Or to engage in some other boisterous act geared to liven up the event and get his teammates fired up.

The senior bowler is Ottumwa bowling’s version of the energizer bunny. His personality is always ON and turned up to full blast until the dual or meet has ended. His jovial nature brings a football-like atmosphere to the bowling lane, and, at times, Roberts’ teammates seem to feed off their teammate’s seemingly boundless energy.

Roberts, however, isn’t just in it for kicks and giggles. He’s a competitor, and when things don’t go as planned, he wears the disappointment on his face. The Bulldog just manages to successfully mix his charismatic personality with a fierce desire to compete and win.

When not serving as a cheerleader for his teammates, Roberts has put together a fine bowling season. His most impressive feats include a seventh place finish at the CIML Metro Conference Championships and an 11th place finish at the state qualifying meets in Des Moines. In addition, Roberts rolled a team-best average of 217 at Waukee and led his teammates with a 231 average in a dual against Johnston. He also posted his team’s second highest average in meets against Des Moines North (238), Des Moines Roosevelt (227), Des Moines Hoover (205), and in a double-dual against Des Moines Roosevelt and Southeast Polk (215).

Roberts has helped to shape the Bulldogs’ image this season as the team has adjusted to life without Tyler Ollum and Alan Brady, two key components of last year’s bowling team who graduated last spring. The Bulldogs will need Roberts’ unbridled enthusiasm when they compete in the Class 2A state championship at Plaza Lanes in Des Moines Tuesday, March 12 starting at 11 a.m. But even if Bulldogs performance doesn’t go according to the blueprint, one thing is for sure, it will be fun. Roberts wouldn’t have it any other way.
