TYLER, Texas —
Former Indian Hills basketball coach Mike Marquis recently notched the 500th win of his coaching career.
On Saturday, Nov. 24, Marquis’s Tyler Junior College basketball team in Tyler, Texas gave him the milestone victory, as the Apaches’ took a 90-54 win over Houston Community College-Northwest in the Kurt Looby Classic.
“(I’ve) been fortunate to coach a lot of good teams and a lot of good players,” Marquis told the Tyler Morning Telegraph. “Obviously, when those things happen there is an individual focus, but it is really about lots and lots of kids I’ve had the privilege to coach at this level. It is a prideful thing, especially for myself and my family to get that number.”
Marquis, 48, has a career record of 500-247, including a mark of 205-131 at Tyler since the 2001-2002 season.
Marquis coached at Indian Hills for two seasons, from 1999-2001, where he posted a record of 60-10. He served one year before that as an associate head coach at Indian Hills.
Before that, he was head coach at Marshalltown Community College, where he had an overall record of 235-106.
A graduate of Newton High School, Marquis played college basketball at Marshalltown and then at Grand View College in Des Moines.
