OTTUMWA —
Albia’s impressive 8-1 season caught the attention of many people in the Iowa sports media.
The proof – four Blue Demons were selected for an all-state team by the Iowa Newspaper Association. Offensive lineman Christian Summers, linebacker Alex Schultz and defensive back Brett Leshen were all named to the Class 2A all-state second team and offensive lineman Zach Davis was selected for the all-state third team.
Schultz was the cornerstone of the Blue Demon defense with a team-leading 83 tackles overall. Leshen followed Schultz with 50 tackles and ranked second on the team in interceptions with four, including one he returned for a 62-yard touchdown.
Davis County earned almost equal recognition from the media: Four Mustangs — offensive linemen Wayne Doerscher and Ben Spurgeon, defensive lineman Logan Boas and defensive back Calvin Utt — were selected for an all-state team. The only difference between the the Mustangs and Blue Demons is that only two of Davis County’s players made the all-state second team: Doerscher and Boas made the second team and Spurgeon and Utt made the third team.
Utt was at the vanguard of the team’s defense, finishing with a team-high 63 tackles and Boas had 54.
In Class 3A, Pella linebacker Nathan Clayberg made all-state first team. Clayberg ranked second on the Dutch in tackles with 74 and he had a team-high 16 solo tackles. In addition, Fairfield offensive lineman Jake Mineart was selected for all-state second team and tight end and wide receiver Spencer Peterman was named to all-state third team. Peterman caught 55 passes, including six for touchdowns, for 729 yards. He averaged more than 13 yards per catch.
Pekin’s Quentin Garrels was selected for the Class A All-State second team. The Panther running back was at the epicenter of Pekin’s offensive attack. In fact, he led the state in rushing touchdowns during the regular season. Garrels finished the season with 31 touchdowns and 1,877 yards.
Garrels is joined on the second team All-State team by his teammate Jared Bond, a defensive lineman who led the Panthers with 85 tackles. North Mahaska’s Beau Freeborn was selected for the Class A All-State first team. He averaged 43.3 yards per punt.
