E-B comes just short of state duals

Area teams compete in regional duals

OTTUMWA — Area Class 1A and Class 2A wrestling teams took part in regional duals on Tuesday night, although none were able to advance to the team regional state meet.

Eddyville-Blakesburg took a regional semifinal win before falling to West Branch in the finals. Sigourney-Keota, Tri-County/Montezuma, Albia and Davis County all suffered losses in the semifinals.

After qualifying 11 wrestlers to districts and winning the Class 1A sectional meet in Van Buren, Cory Connell’s ninth-ranked Rocket squad put themselves within one win of the state duals. E-B beat Lisbon at the regional dual meet  semifinals in Pekin, 48-30, and needed just one more victory on Tuesday to make it to state.

West Branch, however, made sure no area team would be competing next Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. The Bears beat E-B in the regional finals, 48-36, to grab one of the eight berths in the 1A state dual field. The meet went down to the last match.

“We were in a lot of the matches and ended up getting pinned,” said Connell. “In close tight duals like that we cannot give up pins in every loss.”

Earlier in the night, No. 13 West Branch knocked off the team that finished second to E-B at Saturday’s sectional meet. The Bears ended the dual season of Sigourney-Keota (9-12) with a 60-18 victory over the Cobras in the regional semifinals.

“We have a lot of young guys that can be really good in the future and they need to remember what that felt like, and hopefully get better for the future so we don`t run into this problem again,” said Connell.

S-K and Tri-County/Montezuma were a pair of South Iowa Cedar League hopefuls looking to get to the state duals in Class 1A. The Trojans (16-10), who will have eight wrestlers competing for state berths Saturday, lost Tuesday in Truro to seventh-ranked state-qualifier Martensdale-St. Mary’s, 43-30, in a regional semifinal.

E-B, whose dual season ends with a 21-6 record, was one of three South Central Conference teams that entered Tuesday with a shot at the state duals. Both Davis County and Albia, who both shared the SCC title with the Rockets, traveled to Leon looking to make it to the state duals in Class 2A.

The Blue Demons (18-10) ran into a buzzsaw in fourth-ranked Creston/Orient-Macksburg, who took a 63-12 decision in one of the two regional semifinal matchups. Davis County (18-7) had the toughest loss of the night as the Mustangs came one fall shy of Winterset, losing 42-36 in their regional semifinal.

“We were unable to keep pace with Creston, who is, without a doubt, one of the premier teams in Class 2A,” said Albia coach Dave Wenger. “The good news is, we were able to gain a lot of experience with the matches that we wrestled. The bad news is, we have a long ways to go and a lot of work to do to reach Creston’s level.”

Albia and Davis County will compete in district tournament action Saturday at Monroe. The Mustangs have seven wrestlers competing to go to state while the Blue Demons have six.

E-B will host the Class 1A district, which will include both S-K and Tri-County. The Savages have four wrestlers competing while the Trojans have eight.

The districts get started at noon on Saturday.
