MARSHALLTOWN —
The final meet of the season for the entire Ottumwa boys swimming team came on Saturday at the Marshalltown YMCA. Some Bulldog swimmers then had to wait 48 hours to find out if they would be returning to the same pool next weekend for the state’s final meet of year.
As a team, the Bulldogs had a respectable fifth-place showing on Saturday at the district meet, scoring 88.5 points coming with scoring finishes in eight different events. The hosting Bobcats swimmers were upstaged by Cedar Falls, which scored 318 points as a team to win the district title by 82 over Marshalltown and 91 over Waterloo West.
Because of winter weather that struck the southern half of the state on Saturday, not all of the eight district meets were able to be held. Two of the meets, at Des Moines Roosevelt and Southeast Polk, were postponed to Monday making for an extra two days of drama with only the top 24 times in each event qualifying for next Saturday’s state meet at Marshalltown.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association even directed meet managers to restrict the release of resultant times so that those completed results didn’t serve as specific targets for the two remaining districts. Coaches and media were asked to announce only the winning times from each race, and nothing more.
Saturday’s meets at Burlington, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Fort Dodge and Marshalltown went on as scheduled. A total of 264 spots in eight individual events and three relays will be filled for next week’s state meet.
For Ottumwa head boys swimming coach Heidi Owens, Saturday’s district effort continued a great finish to the season.
“The district meet was a success,” Owens said. “We had a lot of swimmers with personal bests and several swimmers on the medal stand. The boys deserve congratulations after a season of hard work.”
The Bulldogs finished in the top five in five different events and had six top-ten swims. Fifth-place was a popular spot for Ottumwa swimmers with Michael Etnyre tying for that position in the 50 freestyle with Waterloo East’s Reid Potwin in a time of 23.97 seconds.
Grant Gullion also finished fifth, taking the spot outright in the 100 butterfly in a time of 58.82 seconds. The Bulldogs’ 200 medley (1:50.09), 200 free (1:35.96) and 400 freestyle (3:37.88) relay teams also scored fifth-place finishes.
Because of the postponements to Monday, the meets that were scheduled to start Saturday at Noon were not able to get underway until the early evening. With the state receiving times and figuring out the top 24 finishers in each event, no official state qualifiers were announced as the Courier went to press.
