Bulldogs fall short at Mount Pleasant

MOUNT PLEASANT — Despite a valiant effort, the Ottumwa girls basketball team fell to Mount Pleasant 52-44 Monday.

Hayli Beeson lead Ottumwa with a team-high 15 points and connected on four of five 3-pointers.

“Offensively, Hayli sparked us,” coach Kevin Patterson said. “When she shoots the ball with confidence she makes a lot of shots.”

The Bulldogs had three chances to take the lead in the last five minutes of the contest, but they were unable to make any clutch baskets.

Still, Patterson was happy with the high level of energy his team exterted throughout the contest.

“The kids gave a great, great effort,” Patterson said. “I was really proud of the way we played tonight, [but] we just didn’t hit enough shots at the end.”

Bulldogs Megan Black posted 10 points and did a superb job defensively against Panther star Taryne Shull. Black and Sydney Strunk held Shull to 12 points on three of 19 shooting.

Strunk added seven points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, Black dished out a team-high four assists and Olivia Roark and Strunk both came up with three steals.
