E-B-F first, Albia second at I-35

OTTUMWA — The Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont wrestling team bounced back from a dual loss on Thursday to claim the team crown at the Rich Gray Classic, hosted by I-35 at Truro, in action Saturday.

The Rockets sent seven wrestlers to the finals, with three claiming crowns.

Albia took second place at the tournament, edging West Marshall and claiming three first-place finishers — including Shadow Leshen’s title victory over E-B-F’s Jeren Glosser at 120 that turned out to be one of the most interesting matchups of the day.

“Jeren Glosser and Shadow Leshen (Albia) had a great match in the finals at 120,” said E-B-F coach Brett Little.

The Rockets finished with 224 team points, while Albia finished with 164.5 and third-place West Marshall earned 158.

Blake Marolf (132), Tucker Black (145) and Chance Wursta (220) all claimed individual titles for the Rockets while Jeren Glosser (120), Jason Crosby (138), Hunter Johnston (182) and Dillon Pigsley (195) all took second-place finishes. Crosby went into double overtime with top-ranked Kyle Blocker from West Marshall in the finals.

“We bounced back great from our first dual loss of the season,” said Little. “The guys wrestled hard and pushed through some really tough matches.”

Albia claimed three first-place finishers, including Shadow Leshen’s victory over Glosser. Griffin Osing claimed the crown at 152 pounds while Brett Leshen took the title at 160.

“We don’t like getting second to anyone, but we can certainly take many positives from our efforts on the weekend as we move forward to the final few weeks of the season,” said Albia coach Dave Wenger.

The Blue Demons needed some big wins late to jump ahead of West Marshall for second place.

“Griffin Osing and Brett Leshen did a great job in the finals round winning championships over two West Marshall opponents to secure second place points for our team,” said Wenger. “However, Bryce Leshen, Caleb White, and Zach Davis scored very valuable points for our team, as they all three wrestled very good matches for third place.”

The Cardinal Comets finished 10th at the meet, as Dustin Miller took the title at 182, Ryan Cale placed second at 113 and Josh Ramos placed fourth at 170.

Van Buren’s Mitch Garrells placed fifth at 195 pounds.
