Park Mikels scored 19 points and the Davis County boys basketball team found its inside game in the second half as the Mustangs handed Chariton its first loss of the season, 65-49, in South Central Conference action Friday.
With the score tied at 21-21 at the half, the Mustangs started to work the ball inside to the post, finding open looks for Colton Roberts, Wyatt Garmon, Kyle Birchmier and McKane Wells. Each contributed, with Roberts leading the way with 11 points.
“They have some very good basketball players,” Davis County coach Jeff Graves said of the Chargers. “We played really good team defense on them.”
T.J. Hockenson led Chariton with 12 points, while Alex Wright added 10 and Bryce Cunningham scored nine. The Chargers (6-1, 2-1 in SCC) travel to Knoxville on Monday.
Austin Erwine reach double figures with 10 points for the Mustangs (3-4, 1-1), who will host Albia next Thursday.

ELDON — Senior Cody Carter stepped up at the right time and the Cardinal boys basketball team woke up in the fourth quarter, turning a tight six-point Comet lead into a 52-29 blowout win over Harmony in Southeast Iowa SuperConference action on Friday.
Carter finished with 17 points for the Comets, who improve to 4-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Charlie Rachford added nine points and Neil Urtado added eight, while Carter ripped down eight rebounds. Sam Pedersen and Dakota Showman each dished five assists for the Comets.
Cardinal will travel to Holy Trinity on Tuesday.
