Bowlers win to open season

OTTUMWA — The defending state champion Ottumwa girls bowling team got the season off to a good start on Monday, as did the boys team, as both squads took impressive victories over Dowling Catholic in action at Val Lanes in Des Moines.

The Ottumwa girls were led by freshman Bailey Palmer’s score of 234 as they took a 2824-2034 victory over Dowling, while the boys were led by sophomore Austin Palmer’s 218 as they took a 2830-2696 win.

Both Ottumwa JV teams were victorious as well.

The Ottumwa girls, who took the state title last season, were missing the services of returning starters Cybil and Sierra Lennie, but the Bulldogs didn’t miss a beat. Palmer stepped up, as did Sydney Swallow (199), Payton Wilbanks (193), Lynissa Lasley (193), Sadie Shaw (190) and Michaela Malloy (186).

“It’s always good to start off on the right foot,” said Ottumwa coach Doug Techel. “I am extremely proud of first two games for the girls, but we need to adjust for our baker games.”

Behind Palmer, Isaac Goodman bowled 209 for the Ottumwa boys, while Joey Lee scored 196, Braxton Coble 186, Anthony Roberts 146 and Jordan Mitchell 140.

“We got off to an OK start,” said Ottumwa coach Brett Salter. “We have a lot to learn, and we are coming home pretty much knowing that.”

Courtney Smith’s 173 led the Ottumwa JV girls while Brandon Six bowled 214 to lead the JV boys.

The Bulldogs won’t be in action again until Monday, Dec. 10, when Ottumwa is scheduled to take on Des Moines Roosevelt at Air Lanes in Des Moines. Ottumwa’s first home action will be Thursday, Dec. 13 against Des Moines Lincoln at Champion Bowl.
