OTTUMWA —
Two players — one of them a former McDonald’s All-American — have been added to the recruiting haul for Indian Hills Community College basketball coach Barret Peery.
The IHCC coach has signed Jelan Kendrick from Marietta, Ga. and Marques Mondy from Grand Rapids, Mich. to letters-of-intent.
Kendrick is a 6-foot-6 wing player who was a McDonald’s and Parade magazine All-American. He also played in the Jordan Brand Classic in Madison Square Garden after his senior season at Wheeler High School.
A consensus top-15 national recruit, Kendrick attended the University of Memphis, but left before playing a game for the Tigers. He played 18 games last year for the University of Mississippi, averaging 5.1 points and 2.3 rebounds. He scored 11 points in a late-season game at Kentucky, the eventual national champions.
“Jelan is a big ball-handler that comes to us with great experience,” Peery said of Kendrick. “He really understands the game and knows how to play. He is very good in transition and also in the half court, playing ‘pick and roll’ basketball.”
Mondy fits the mold of a number of his future teammates on the Warrior roster — a very athletic wing player. The 6-foot-4 product of Forest Hills Central High School was a standout in football and track, as well as basketball, in high school. He also played on a top AAU team in Michigan.
Peery is excited about Mondy’s poetential, saying, “Marques is extremely competitive in his play and really wants to win. He has a great ability to play in the transition game we run and he can really guard all over the floor.”
The signing of Kendrick and Mondy brings to five the number of newcomers for next season, to go along with as many as eight returning players from last year’s 33-4 team.
Peery said he would like to round out the roster with a couple of post players and hopes to finalize his recruiting over the next couple of weeks.
