BUSSEY —
Quentin Fowler batted 2-for-4 with five RBI to help the Moulton-Udell baseball team overcome some sluggish play Tuesday in a 14-4, five-inning Class 1A district baseball win over Melcher-Dallas.
Moulton-Udell moves on to the third round of districts with the victory. The Eagles will take on Twin Cedars at Bussey at 7 p.m. on Thursday night. The Sabers won 15-1 in the late game at Bussey on Tuesday to advance. M-U took an 11-7 loss to Twin Cedars in Bluegrass Conference play on June 26. The Eagles are 0-2 against the Sabers in two close games this season.
Thursday’s winner between M-U and Twin Cedars will move on to the Class 1A, District 9 finals, held at Legion Field in Ottumwa on Saturday.
The Eagles only needed five hits to score their 14 runs Tuesday, as Melcher-Dallas committed nine errors to help M-U along. The Eagles, however, committed four errors of their own and were fortunate they didn’t prove to be more costly.
“It was an ugly win,” admitted M-U coach Brent Martsching. “The key to this deal is ‘keep playing,’ so we accomplished that. But we know we will have to play better if we want to play beyond Thursday.”
Kyle Neher earned the victory on the mound for M-U, allowing four hits through five innings of work. He fanned four batters and walked just one. Only one of the runs charged to Neher was earned.
Grey McCoy doubled for the Eagles (13-9) and had an RBI. Zach Boettcher, Logan McCoy and David Sheets all had base hits for M-U.
