EBF falls to No. 1 Dike-New Hartford in 2A Regional Finals

GRINNELL — Entering the regional final play, only two volleyball teams had a chance to take unbeaten record to the state tournament.

On Tuesday night, top-ranked Mediapolis booked its trip to the Class 3A state tournament by knocking off a South Central Conference squad for their 41st-straight win.

On Wednesday night, Dike-New Hartford did the same.

Just 24 hours after the unbeaten Bullettes kept their hopes of a perfect season alive at the hands of Davis County, the top-ranked Wolverines booked their ticket to the Class 2A state volleyball tournament. Like Mediapolis, DNH swept a very tough squad from the SCC as Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont saw a fantastic season end in Grinnell with a 25-21, 25-9, 25-11 loss to the 42-0 Wolverines in the Class 2A, Region 6 finals on Wednesday.

The Wolverines struck early with the first five points of the match, but EBF rallied back with their strongest run of the night. An ace serve by Harlie Boyer brought EBF within 9-5 and the Rockets used an 8-5 run to get as close as 15-13.

Errors, however, caught up with EBF as a serving error and a pair of net violations helped DNH open a late six-point lead before putting away the opening set, 25-21.

The Wolverines started quickly in each of the final two games and wouldn’t let up. DNH scored nine of the first 11 points and dominated the second set, 25-9, and squashed an early EBF (30-9) rally in game three with four straight points to open a 9-3 lead on the way to a 25-11, match-clinching win.

The victory sends No. 1 Dike-New Hartford to a 2A state quarterfinal matchup with 24-6 Sumner-Fredericksburg next Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. on court one in the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. EBF, meanwhile, wraps up a steallar 30-9 season that included a perfect run to a second-straight SCC title.

Head coach Gladys Genskow will lose four seniors, (Boyer, Shunyl Busch, Hunter Varner and Amanda Ratliff). The Rockets will return several key starters, including Tasha Alexander, Karlie Taylor and Paige Shafer who played in all 100 sets for EBF this season.
