Valley hits from long range; tops Ottumwa girls team
OTTUMWA — The West Des Moines Valley Tigers had their eye on the rim on Saturday afternoon at Evans Middle School.
So did Ottumwa, but the nylon was a tad more kind to the Tigers.
Valley drilled nine 3-pointers from beyond the arc to down head coach Stan Rupe’s squad 57-39 on Senior Night.
Valley connected on seven makes from three-point land in the second half and jumped out to a 11-0 lead from the get-go.
Three-consecutive daggers from behind the three-point stripe pushed Valley’s lead to 44-24 at the 1:40 mark of the third period.
“We made three trips down the floor and three different girls hit 3-pointers. We can’t guard that,” said Rupe.
Valley’s Lucy Montgomery led all scorers with 18 and hammered home five of Valley’s long-range makes.
Kelsey Nickerson’s 3-pointer cut Valley’s lead to just 13-8 early on in the second quarter. The 8-2 run was squelched by Montgomery’s 3-pointer of her own.
Ottumwa trailed just 25-17 at the half as the Bulldogs started heating up down low on the blocks.
OHS senior forward Missy Staloch led Ottumwa with 13 points. Nickerson finished with 11 points and sophomore center Rachel Hinebaugh would net eight points.
Valley improved to 9-10 on the year. Ottumwa (10-10) plays its final regular season game on Friday versus second-ranked Des Moines East.
