CEDAR RAPIDS —
The Ottumwa volleyball team managed to win just one of five matches at the Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational last Saturday.
“We could have done a lot better,” coach Jessica Carson said. “I expected us to play a lot better than we did. We just didn’t play to our abilities. We were not capitalizing on the things we needed to capitalize on.”
The Bulldogs’ sole victory was over Cedar Rapids Prairie. Ottumwa won the first game 21-18, dropped a close second game 23-21 and won the third and final game 15-10.
“They played very well against Prairie and I would say for the most part our hitting wasn’t that bad,” Carson said. “Katie (Sammons) did a really good job at the net.”
Ottumwa’s losses came against top-ranked Mediapolis (3A), South Tama, Cedar Rapids Washington and Clear Creek-Amana.
Middle hitter Sammons paced the Bulldogs with 31 kills and 23 blocks. Senior libero Olivia Roark had 70 digs, junior outside hitter Megan Black finished with 39 digs and freshman outside hitter Ellie Hammack made 26-26 serves. Also, senior setter Beth Overturf had 27 assists and sophomore setter Chloe Davis added 24 assists.
Getting out of serve receive was an area where Ottumwa struggled, Carson said.
“We just struggled at returning the serves,” she said.
Ottumwa (13-13, 3-1) plays Des Moines East Tuesday at Evans Middle School.
