OTTUMWA —
The fifth-ranked Ottumwa golf team’s hot streak ended Thursday when it fell to CIML Metro foe Des Moines Roosevelt by four strokes, 162-158, at Waveland Golf Course.
Going into the dual, the Bulldogs had finished first in their last three invitationals and last four events.
Conspicuous by their absence at the dual were Matt Walker and Joe Wetrich; Ottumwa’s top two golfers. Dillon Patritto tied with Roughrider Eddie Bauer for the lowest individual round of the dual with a 38.
Though Patritto lost two strokes after losing his ball on the fifth hole, he still managed to bounce back and tie for first, Ottumwa coach Scott Maas said.
“He played a really nice round,” the coach said. “Dillon showed some real toughness and grit.”
Hoyt Grooms carded a 40 and Jacob Gardner shot a 41.
“Hoyt and Jacob also played tough and hung in there,” Maas said.
Anthony Roberts finished with a 43 and Braxton Coble carded a 45.
“We knew Roosevelt had a pretty good team because we played them several times this year,” Maas said. “Penalty strokes hurt us. We just hit it some places you can’t hit it.”
Ottumwa plays Des Moines North in a make-up dual Monday at Grandview Golf Course. The Bulldogs play the second half of the Metro Conference 7 tournament Thursday. Ottumwa jumped to a 15-stroke lead in the first half of the tourney with a score of 293.
