OSKALOOSA —
Sidney Baumann scored 27 points — 12 of those on four huge 3-pointers — as the Fairfield girls basketball team upset 10th-ranked Oskaloosa 54-49 Saturday in Class 4A, Region 5 semifinal action.
With the stunning victory, the Trojans get the chance to pull off one more upset against a ranked team to earn the right to go to the state tournament. Fairfield (11-12) will take on third-ranked Benton Community (20-2) on Tuesday at Marengo in the regional finals. Benton took a 59-31 semifinal win over Grinnell Saturday to advance. Benton’s two losses this season are both to Center Point-Urbana.
Hanna Greiner added nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Brittany Kurtz scored 11 points as Fairfield avanged a 44-26 loss to Osky.
10th-ranked Oskaloosa — which finished second in the Little Hawkeye Conference — ends the season with 18-5 overall record. The 18 wins were the most in school history.
