OTTUMWA —
If Oskaloosa and Carlisle fans have learned anything in the last two years, it’s not to leave early when their two teams are battling on the gridiron.
Last year, Osky held on for a thrilling 23-22 postseason win at home over the Wildcats. On Friday, it was the Carlisle’s turn to hold on late as the Indians’ attempt to come back from an early 22-0 deficit fell one score short as the Wildcats (2-1, 1-0) earned a 29-22 victory despite a pair of fourth-quarter Osky touchdowns.
Jared Pace rushed for 104 yards on 29 carries and had a three-yard touchdown run in the second quarter after a pair of Daniel Hupke first-quarter runs helped Carlisle take a 22-point lead in the opening 12 minutes. Nat Van Veldhuizen added a six-yard scoring run for the Indians, who cut Carlisle’s lead to just seven on Austin Redlich’s 48-yard interception return for a score.
The Indians (0-3, 0-1) will look for their first win of the season next Friday at home against Chariton in Class 3A, District 8 action.
