Warrior spikers take two to close regular season

OTTUMWA — The Indian Hills volleyball team went to Missouri looking to find some momentum to carry into the postseason. The Warriors got all they wanted on their final day of play in the regular season.

IHCC closed out a successful trip to the Jefferson College Tournament with a pair of victories. After splitting the first two games against Seminole State, the Warriors took games three and four to earn a 25-20, 15-25, 27-25, 25-20 win in the morning match before scoring a three-game 25-19, 25-22, 25-17 sweep over the hosting Jefferson squad Saturday afternoon.

“Defensively, we played great. Our back row is really spot on. Jessi Black does a great job for us every day,” Indian Hills head coach Lyndsey Lyon said. “We played as a team as well as I’ve seen us play all year. It was really fun to watch. We picked up the speed of our offense quite a bit.”

Black led the Warriors on the day with 37 digs, including 20 in the sweep against Jefferson. Fellow sophomore Emily Eswonia also closed out a big tournament by leading IHCC at the net, hammering 26 kills on 63-71 hitting.

Indian Hills won three of their four matches at the Jefferson College Tournament, coming one game away from sweeping the tournament, and got an upset of 17th-ranked Hutchinson while taking No. 12 Missouri State-West Plains to five games. IHCC will look for a similar high level of play next weekend as the Warriors (28-9) head to the postseason looking for a berth in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament.

Indian Hills opens super regional play at Kaskaskia College in Illinois on Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

“It’s right where we want to be going into next weekend,” Lyon said. “I’m really hopeful for a great super regional tournament.”
