Eagles end emotional week with sweep

OTTUMWA — The Moulton-Udell baseball team ended a difficult week with a long day of baseball on Thursday, closing out the regular season with a Bluegrass Conference sweep of Melcher-Dallas.

The Eagles won the first game 2-1 in 10 innings and took the second game 10-8.

Much of the Moulton-Udell squad — and community — attended the funeral of Dyllan Lawson Thursday morning before the game. Lawson, 19, passed away last week. He was a 2010 graduate of M-U and a former teammate of every player on the Eagle squad.

“It was a real emotional day for our kids,” said M-U coach Brent Martsching. “They all had a long week and a longer day, and I’m real proud of all of them.”

Zach Boettcher’s one-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Eagles a huge 2-1 win in the first game. Kyle Neher took the win on the mound, in one inning of scoreless relief of Kalen Martsching. Martsching pitched the limit — nine innings, alllowing just one run in the first inning. At one point, he had retired 22 straight batters.

Boettcher also hit an RBI single in the first inning in support of his pitcher.

In the nightcap, Quentin Fowler belted a two-run double in the seventh to break up an 8-8 tie. Fowler had three RBI in that contest, while Trey Stansberry hit two doubles and knocked in two runs.

Moulton-Udell is now 12-9 overall and finishes the Bluegrass loop with a 9-5 conference record, good enough to tie for second place in the league. Murray was conference champ at 12-2.

The Eagles will get some rest before they open up district play with action at Twin Cedars on Tuesday. The Eagles and the Sabers split during the regular season.
