Bulldogs swept on the road by East

DES MOINES — The Ottumwa baseball team didn’t plan on starting this week on the road. After a severe storm with high wind gusts damaged the backstop fence at Legion Memorial Field, a week suddenly full of road games got off to a rough start at Des Moines East.

The Scarlets dominated game one on their home diamond, scoring runs in every inning with 11 runs in the last two frames ending the opener early, 16-1 in four. East then rallied off Ottumwa game two starting pitching Kyle Keck by scoring four runs in the fourth inning to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 7-5 win that completed a CIML Metro Conference sweep for the Scarlets.

Ottumwa scattered five hits on Monday, but weren’t able to push enough runs across, and lost 16-1 to DM East at Ottumwa.

Collin Schulz was hot from the plate for Ottumwa. Schulz went 1-2 and scored one run. He tripled in the first inning.

The first inning saw Ottumwa score its only run on the day on an RBI single by Michael Collins.

The lead stayed with DM East after the first, when it scored three runs on an error, a fielder’s choice, and a hit by pitch.

DM East added six more runs in the bottom of the third. Shane Sullivan then finished off a great 2-3 opener by drilling a walk-off homer in the fourth inning, driving in six runs and becoming the fourth Scarlet player to score three times in the opener.

In the second game, Ottumwa still fell to East despite a 2-4 effort at the plate from Seth Griffiths. Two of Ottumwa’s runs were scored thanks to timely hitting by Griffiths, who singled in the third inning and doubled in the sixth inning to put the Bulldogs on the board.

Sullivan, Blake Cunningham, Thomson and Robert Hansen combined for seven hits and five RBI to lead East in the nightcap.

The bottom of the second saw DM East take an early lead, 2-0. Austin Robbins started the rally for East with a single. The scoreboard lit up again for East when Robbins scored on an error.

East never surrendered the lead after the fourth inning, scoring four runs on a two-run double by Hansen and a two-run single by Sullivan.

One run in the top of the sixth helped Ottumwa close its deficit to 7-5. An RBI double by Griffiths fueled Ottumwa’s comeback. East stopped the rally after James got Schulz to fly out.

Ottumwa (13-9, 5-5) is back on the road for a Metro doubleheader Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against Des Moines Lincoln. The Bulldogs then head to Mount Pleasant on Friday and hope the backstop fence at Legion Field is repaired in time for a Metro doubleheader next Monday against Des Moines North.
