Fullenkamp’s field goal wins it for Mustangs

FAIRFIELD — Ryan Fullenkamp, a first-year field goal kicker, hit his first career field goal from 20 yards away with 18.6 seconds left to give Davis County a 27-26 win over Fairfield Friday night in Fairfield.

Fullenkamp ended the game-winning drive with his kick, but two big catches by back up receivers were huge in the drive for the Mustangs. Tyler Knapp had a 15-yard reception for a first down and Sam McClure’s 23-yard catch and run to the two, set up the winning score.

“These are two guys who are just now getting a chance to be part of the passing game,” said Davis County co-coach Joe Rasmussen. “They really stepped up”.

The Trojans opened the game with an eight-play drive that ended with a fumble deep in DC territory. The Mustangs made them pay, as Calvin Utt hit Park Mikels with a 48-yard scoring strike for the early 6-0 lead. Mikels would leave the game soon after with an injury.

Fairfield answered right back, as Dillon Fry scored on a six-yard run to tie it at six.

The Trojans went up 13-6 midway through the second quarter, when Johnathon Hoehne went in from nine yards out.

Utt tossed his second touchdown pass on the next Mustang drive to pull DC back to within 13-12. Damen Dixon was on the receiving end of the 30 yard pass.

After some early success running the ball by the Mustangs, Fairfield took away the DC running game with the exception of two long runs by Utt in the second half. Utt would have 20 pass attempts in the opening half.

“I called a few too many inside running plays” added Rasmussen. “In the long run though, it probably helped open up the passing game.”

Fry continued to pick up yards on the ground for Fairfield. He would rush for 102 first half yards.

The 13-12 score stood up as both teams headed to the lockerroom.

One of the things the Mustangs emphasized coming out of the half was trying to limit Fry rushing the ball.

“We didn’t change our scheme very much but we really worked at taking that away from them in the second half,” said DC co-coach Todd White.

Even though Fry would be held to -6 yards on the ground, he picked up 103 yards passing in the final half. Two of his five completions went for scores. Midway through the third quarter he connected with Spencer Peterman on a 24-yard pass and the Trojans led 20-12.

Davis County scored on their next possession on a 43-yard run by Utt. The Mustang drive was kept alive, as the Trojans were called for roughing the kicker.

“I just take my run depending on what their rush is doing,” said Utt. “I started outside and cut back.”

Fairfield put the lead back at eight, as Fry’s second touchdown pass was a six yarder to Justin Hammes. The Mustang defensive line rose up and blocked the extra point kick. That proved to be costly as the game wound to its conclusion.

Dixon’s 36-yard kick-off return gave the Mustangs good field position, but Utt would be picked off two plays later and Jonny Swanson returned the pick to the DC 28-yard line.

The Trojans fumbled the ball right back to the Mustangs and the score stayed at 26-18 at the end of three.

DC again closed to within two with just over five minutes gone in the fourth. Utt scored on a 21 yard run to make the score 26-24.

The Mustangs recovered a fumble on the ensuing kick-off and started at the Trojan 37. Three plays later, they returned the favor by putting the ball on the ground.

The final DC drive started at the Trojan 40 after Dixon returned the Trojan punt 36 yards. With time winding down and not many timeouts left, the Mustangs had to run the two-minute drill to score. After Knapp’s big catch, Utt hit McClure over the middle and he was tackled just short of the goal.

“Calvin (Utt) made a good throw and I could see the end zone,” said McClure. Three more pass plays couldn’t get it in for the Mustangs, and that set the stage for Fullenkamp to split the uprights.

“I was hoping we’d score, but when we didn’t, the coaches and my teammates all told me — you can do this,” said Fullenkamp.

“We practice the two-minute drill every day,” said White. “It wasn’t perfect, but we pulled it out.”

In the final seconds, the Trojans moved into DC territory on a pass interference call and it wasn’t until Dixon intercepted the Trojan pass that the Mustangs were 2-0.

Davis County returns home next Friday to start district play against I-35. Fairfield opens district play at home against Washington.
