CORYDON —
If their first night of competition is any indicator, Albia and Davis County should have fun battling back and forth on the cross country course this season.
The two schools beat each other out to earn team titles Thursday at the Wayne Invitational. Davis County dominated the girls race, winning with 29 points to beat the Lady Dees by 31, while the Albia boys edged the Mustangs by 16 with 46 points to earn their own season-opening team victory.
The Mustang girls opener saw a sweep of the top-three finishes for just the third time in program history by Ally McClure (14:35), Chandra Smith (14:47) and Addie McKee (14:54). Davis County coach Josh Husted feels his team has many more special moments ahead this season.
“Our girls qualified for state last year and have a lot of high hopes to go back this year. They’ve brought a lot of experience of success with them into this season,” Husted said. “I have a lot of veterans that are stepping up again and a good nucleus of runners that, if we can put it all together, could have a really special season.
“Anytime you have a top-three finish in a meet, it’s a huge deal.”
“Davis County’s got a great program under Josh Husted,” Albia assistant cross-country coach Jani Dorpinghaus added. “Our girls know they’ll have to put in some hard work to catch up to them.”
The Lady Dees had a trio of girls finish in the top-ten. Kim Teno finished sixth in a time of 15:30, 17 seconds ahead of seventh-place Michelle Manser and 25 seconds in front of eighth-place Kristyn Garver.
The Albia boys got top-five finishes from Colton Dorpinghaus and J.D. Anderson to earn their team title. Dorpinghaus took second in a time of 16:51, Anderson finished third in a time of 17:51 and Aaron Ambrose came home seventh in a time of 18:13 for the Blue Demons.
“We felt coming in that we had a pretty good boys team that put in a lot of good work over the summer,” Dorpinghaus said. “We have three top guys that are going to put in position to have some great team finishes this year.”
Clay Roberts led the Davis County boys with a ninth-place run of 18:21 while Zach Houghland finished 10th in a time of 18:23. The Mustangs are hoping to break a 28-year drought for the boys program without a victory.
“This is the most talented boys team we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Husted said of the boys team. “I knew we had a lot of talented, young runners that would be coming up this season. A second-place finish is as high a finish we’ve had in several years.”
Centerville finished third behind their South Central Conference foes in both races with the Big Reds scoring 85 points, led by a victorious run by Payton Busch, while the Redettes tallied up 90. The Chariton girls finished fifth with 173 points on the night while the Charger boys took seventh with a 182 point total.
Albia and Chariton join a host of area schools Tuesday at Pekin’s Lake Keomah Invitational. Davis County joins several other local squads at the Van Buren Invite while Centerville will be off until running in the Mustangs’ meet at Lake Fisher in Bloomfield on Thursday.
