Indian Hills hosts Courtside Classic

OTTUMWA — The Indian Hills basketball team will have a very busy start to the second half of its season as the Warriors return to action this week. The Warriors will play three games in as many nights.

The first two games will be Tuesday and Wednesday in the Courtside Bar & Grill Classic at the Hellyer Student Life Center. Indian Hills’ opening-night opponent at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening will be Olive-Harvey, one of the city colleges in Chicago. It will be the first meeting between IHCC and the Panthers since the 2006-07 season-opener when the Warriors drilled Olive-Harvey, 92-59.

The other two teams in the tourney will be Mineral Area College from Park Hills, Mo. and Western Nebraska. Those two will play at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Indian Hills will take on Mineral Area on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. and will look to avenge an earlier loss to the Cardinals. Mineral Area defeated the Warriors in double-overtime last month in Missouri. The Cardinals are 12-2 and have won 10 games in a row, a streak that includes the win over IHCC.

Mineral Area hasn’t been beaten since a two-point loss to Southwestern Illinois. Their only other loss was to John A. Logan, a team they later defeated by 15 points at home.

The Cardinals have been idle since Dec. 13. They have two players, Al Rapier and Carlton Guyton, that signed with Division I schools in the early signing period in November.

Western Nebraska, located in Scottsbluff, Neb., will bring a 9-3 record to Ottumwa. They’ll play Olive-Harvey on Wednesday, after opening the tournament against Mineral Area Tuesday. The Cougars will stay over and battle Indian Hills in a New Year’s Eve game at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Western Nebraska won nine straight games before losing their last two games. They are led by first-year coach Russ Beck, who was a student manager under current IHCC coach Jeff Kidder when he was at Dixie State College.

The Cougars are paced by Scott Bamforth, a sophomore guard who signed with Weber State last month.

This will be the first meeting between Indian Hills and Western Nebraska since the 2001-02 season when IHCC won two games, both at Scottsbluff. It will be the first time WNCC has ever played in the Hellyer Center.

Indian Hills has a 12-4 record going into the three-game homestand this week. They are a perfect 11-0 on their home court. After setting the school record for defense scoring average last year, the Warriors have exhibited another stingy defense, allowing only 63.2 points a game.

They are led in scoring by freshman Dijon Farr who is scoring 12.1 points a game. Also in double figures are sophomore guards Aaron Austin and Dwan McMillan, averaging 11.2 and 10.8 points a game, respectively.

After this week’s trio of games, the Warriors will have two road games next week before beginning conference play at home against Marshalltown Jan. 16. The four league teams have a combined record of 48-12 so far this season.
