AREA GIRLS BASKETBALL ACTION: Holm sparks Sigourney
SIGOURNEY — The Sigourney girls basketball team used a 19-point fourth quarter to sneak past Iowa Valley 50-45 in South Iowa Cedar League action Tuesday night.
Carolyn Holm scored a season high 33 points and added a game high 13 rebounds to record her second double-double in as many nights. Monday night, Sigourney traveled to Montezuma and won by a score of 52-37. In that game, Holm scored 29 and pulled down 14 boards.
The back-to-back wins lift Sigourney to a 5-1 record. Sigourney will take a week off before traveling to Keota on Dec. 22.

No. 10 Lady Dees shoot down Moravia from long range
ALBIA — A strong first quarter allowed the 10th-ranked Albia Lady Dees to blow out Moravia, 76-22 Tuesday night in non-conference girls basketball action Tuesday.
Five 3-pointers in a 26-point first quarter allowed Albia to cruise the rest of the way through.
McKenzie Wynn scored 15 points and converted on three 3’s to lead the team. Kara Gomaat and Jessie Gravert both made two 3’s in the contest. As a team the Lady Dees converted on 8-11 attempts and were 31-61 from the field.
Albia (5-0) will play again Thursday night against Knoxville, who is ranked 11th in Class 3A.

Centerville girls snag fifth win

PUTNAM COUNTY — The Centerville Redettes recorded their fifth win of the season with a 48-44 victory over Putnam County, Mo. Tuesday night in non-conference girls basketball action.
Led by Kaylee Mehrhoff’s 18 points, the Redettes were able to score 13 fourth quarter points to seal the victory. Mehrhoff also grabbed seven rebounds while Avery Schmidt hit 11 points.
Centerville (5-3, 2-0) will be back in action Thursday when they host Eddyville-Blakesburg.

Pekin picks up win

PEKIN — A strong first half helped lift the Pekin Panthers past Columbus Junction 61-36 in Southeast Iowa SuperConference girls basketball action Tuesday.
The Panthers were able to score 31 points in the first two quarters.
Jessica Deutsch led the scoring attack with 16 points and Krystin Bradshaw added another 12 points. Jessi Martin chipped in 10 points and drilled a pair of 3-pointers while dishing six assists. Deutsch came up with six steals to spur the Pekin defense while Erin Mosinski grabbed five boards and blocked three shots.
Pekin will be back in action Friday when they travel to Highland.

Moulton-Udell remains atop Bluegrass

MOULTON — Bluegrass Conference basketball was in full swing Tuesday night when Moulton-Udell downed Lamoni, 58-42.
A 24-point fourth quarter put M-U over the top. Kaylee Stansberry led Moulton-Udell with 17 points and Makcenzie Clark added 13 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles.
M-U (5-0, 3-0) will play two more times before Christmas break. This Friday against Diagonal and Saturday afternoon against Moravia.

Comet girls fall in overtime

NEW LONDON — The Cardinal Comet girls basketball team received its second loss of the season after a 57-49 overtime loss to New London in Southeast Iowa SuperConference basketball action Tuesday night.
Led by Cory Campbell’s 15 points in regulation, the Comets were only able to score two points in the forced overtime period. New London managed 10 in the extra period.
Cardinal (6-2, 3-2) will play Friday when they host Harmony.

Tri-County picks up first win

THORNBURG — The Tri-County Trojans were able to pick up their first win of the season Tuesday night. The Trojans beat HLV 29-25, in South Iowa Cedar League action.
Kacy Brumbaugh led the way for the Trojans (1-4) scoring eight points. Teresa Alberg scored another six and added nine rebounds.
The Trojans shot 10-17 from the free-throw line.
Tri-County will be back in action Friday night when they travel to Iowa Valley.
