AREA BOYS BASKETBALL ACTION: Van Buren blows out Harmony

KEOSAUQUA — The Van Buren Warriors basketball team blew out Harmony 87-33 in boys basketball action Friday night.

The Warriors (2-0) were able to score 22 points in each of the two opening quarters to take an early lead, and never looked back. The team was led by Zach Boyd’s 16 points. Kaleb Millard finished with a 15.

Lucas Batten led Harmony with 16 points.

Van Buren will be back in action Tuesday at Burlington Notre Dame.

Sigourney nets first victory

SIGOURNEY — Led by two players with 20 points each, the Sigourney boys basketball team was able to run past North Mahaska 76-50 in South Iowa Cedar League action Friday night.

Andrew Fitz led all scorers with 22 points and sophomore J.C Abrahamson added 21 in the victory.

A 39-point first half allowed Sigourney to gain an early lead in the blowout. Junior Andrew Utterback added 18 points and two 3’s to help the Savages net their first win of the season.

Sigourney (1-1) will be back in action Tuesday against Lynnville-Sully.

Comets lose third straight

BURLINGTON — A strong full-court press was too much for the Comets to handle against Burlington Notre Dame as Cardinal was beaten 72-35 in Southeast Iowa SuperConference action Friday.

Comets leading scorer Trevor Kayser found himself in early foul trouble and left a big void in the Comets offense. Peyton Rupe, who hit the Comets’ only four 3-pointers, finished the night with 17 points.

Notre Dame’s Kameron Gray led all scorers with 22 points. Cardinal (0-3, 0-2) will travel to Holy Trinity Tuesday.

Moravia drops second straight

LAMONI — The Moravia boys basketball team dropped its second straight game of the season with an 18-point loss at Lamoni 72-54, in action Friday.

Moravia was led by Kody Kerr’s 11 points. A 20-point second quarter spurred Lamoni.

Moravia will get back in action Tuesday when they travel to Eddyville-Blakesburg.
