AREA GIRLS BASKETBALL ACTION: Pekin secures another win
WAPELLO — The Pekin Panthers recored their third win of the season with a 45-34 victory over Wapello Friday night.
The Panthers were led by Annie Jones’ 12 points and Jessica Deutsch added 10 with six rebounds in the contest.
The Panthers were able to push the pace in the second half and play some of their best defense all season.
The Panthers will be back in action Tuesday when they host WACO.

North Mahaska edges Sigourney
SIGOURNEY — Just a few days after being ranked, the Sigourney Savages lost their first game of the season. Sigourney, who was ranked 14th, was beaten late in the game, 48-45, by North Mahaska in South Iowa Cedar League action Friday.
Two players were able to chalk up double-doubles for Sigourney (3-1), but the scoring came at the wrong time. Carolyn Holm found herself in foul trouble early in the second quarter which allowed North Mahaska (4-0) to utilize their post players for 12 points and hold the Savage’s to six. Holm finished the game with 13 points and 11 rebounds and was bested only by teammate Stephani Atwood’s 20 points and 10 boards.
“When Holm went out they were able to pound the ball down low and take the lead,” said Sigourney head coach Jennifer Hobbs.
Sigourney committed 32 turnovers as a team and managed just three steals in the loss. Sigourney will be back in action Tuesday when they face eight-ranked Lynnville-Sully on the road.

Moulton-Udell remains untouched

MELCHER — The Moulton-Udell girls basketball squad remained undefeated Friday night with a 56-38 win over Melcher-Dallas.
A stingy defense in the second half put Moulton-Udell (3-0) over the top. M-U allowed just six points in the third quarter.
“This was a great effort on the road for us,” said M-U head coach Jason Ogden. “We really stepped up defensively.”
Kaylee Stansberry’s 17 points led the way for M-U, while Mackenzie Clark added 10.
Moulton-Udell will be back in action Tuesday against Novinger.

LAMONI — Three games have equaled three straight losses for the Moravia girls basketball team, which was beated 53-30 by Lamoni in action Friday night.
Kaitlyn Tracy led Moravia with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jessi Naughten led the Mohawks in assists and steals.
Moravia will play again Tuesday when they travel to Eddyville-Blakesburg.

Fairfield drops second straight

MOUNT PLEASANT — Strong free throw shooting by Mount Pleasant was enough to take down the Fairfield Trojans, 51-38, in Southeast Conference action Friday.
Led by Meredith Flattery’s 11 points the Trojans started the first half fast but fizzled out in the second half scoring 17 points in the final two quarters.
Mount Pleasant was able to shoot 20-29 from the free-throw line and used an 18-point fourth quarter to lift themselves to victory.
Fairfield (1-2) will take on Ottumwa tonight.

KEOSAUQUA — The Van Buren girls basketball team was handed its first loss of the season by Harmony 56-42 in action Friday night.
Dakota Zeitler scored 21 points and pulled down seven rebounds for Van Buren.
The Warriors went 13-23 from the free throw line and weren’t able to match Harmony’s 21-point fourth quarter.
Van Buren (2-1) is back in action tonight against Fort Madison.
