AREA BOYS BASKETBALL ACTION: Melcher-Dallas pulls away from Moravia

MORAVIA — The Moravia Mohawks weren’t able to find a win in their boys basketball season opener. Instead they were beaten 63-51 by Melcher-Dallas.

The Mohawks kept the score close, before Melcher-Dallas was able to open up a 15-point fourth quarter to seal the victory. Moravia was only capable of scoring nine points in the fourth quarter.

Kody Kerr led all shooters with 18 points, including the Mohawks lone 3-pointer. Austin Cosgrove was the closest Mohawk player to Kerr with eight points.

“We played a very solid game up until the fourth quarter,” said head coach Brian Bickel. “We just need to get back in the gym and work on breaking the press.”

Moravia will open conference play this Friday when they travel to Lamoni. Melcher-Dallas will face off with Moulton-Udell Friday night.

Van Buren downs Cardinal

KEOSAUQUA — The Van Buren Warriors were able to outscore and out rebound the Cardinal Comets for a 62-43 victory in both teams first game of the season.

Van Buren came out strong in the first quarter scoring 19 points and holding the Comets to just eight in the first period and a total of 14 for the half.

“We had a slow start tonight, and didn’t rebound well,” said Cardinal coach Kenny Hamm. “We gave up 14 second-chance points in the first half, and it hurt us a lot.”

The Warriors were led by Jordan Hervey’s 23 points, followed closely by Lucas Sandry’s 19. Sandry also hit a 3-pointer on the evening.

Trevor Kayser led the Comets with 14 points and eight rebounds. Senior Matt Smith chimed in with 13 points on the evening.

Van Buren (1-0) will be back in action Thursday against Harmony, while the Comets travel to Pekin to play the Panthers.

Trojans downed by Oskaloosa

FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield Trojans were down just two points going into the fourth quarter against the Oskaloosa Indians Monday night. Unfortunately the Trojans couldn’t build off of their 17-point third quarter, and only scored one bucket in the fourth, to lose 59-45 to Oskaloosa in boys basketball action.

The Trojans (0-1) were led by Grant Curran’s 13 points and Derek Byrnes who scored 11 in the contest. Both players contributed buckets from deep. As a team the Trojans made four three-point field goals, three by Byrnes and one by Curran.

Fairfield was able to force nine steals and grab 28 rebounds, led by Willie Ghents nine, but the Indians were too much to handle in the final quarter. Oskaloosa was able to score 14 points and all but ran away with the game late.

Fairfield will look to get its offense firing again Friday when the Trojans host Mount Pleasant. Oskaloosa (1-0) will travel to Pella on Friday.
