AREA GIRLS BASKETBALL ACTION: Sigourney knocks off Belle Plaine
BELLE PLAINE — The Sigourney girls basketball team, led by head coach Jenny Hobbs, started the season on a high note this past weekend with a win over English Valleys 32-24 and rose the bar even higher Monday night.
The Savages (2-0) downed 13th-ranked Belle Plaine 57-28 in Class 2A basketball action Monday night.
“This game was a huge improvement from our first game,” said Hobbs. “Our guards did a really good job of getting it inside to our post players.”
And the post players didn’t disappoint. Stephani Atwood scored 15 first half points after Carolyn Holm found herself in some foul trouble. Atwood helped fuel Sigourney to 23-12 point lead at half-time. Atwood finished the game with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
“They have super quick guards that we defending really well,” said Hobbs. “I’m very proud of our overall defensive effort.”
With some wiggle room in the second half to play less tentative with her fouls, Holm became red hot, scoring all 18 of the team’s third-quarter points and all but closing out the game.
Combined, Holm and Atwood outscored the entire Belle Plaine team. Holm led all scorers with 24.
Sigourney will travel to HLV tonight, before opening up at home Friday against North Mahaska.

FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield Trojans earned their first win in Class 3A girls basketball action Monday night with a 52-49 victory over Oskaloosa.
After leading by five at halftime, the Trojans found themselves down one point with 30 seconds left on the clock. That’s when Serena Ward decided to takeover. With the clock ticking down, Ward nailed a clutch bucket to give her team the lead. Ward finished the game with six points and Heather Mason finished with a game-leading 15 points. Meredith Flattery added 10 points, including two 3’s, seven rebounds and four assists.
Defensive adjustments also were vital to the victory. After giving up 13, 14, and 16 points in the first three quarters of action, Fairfield head coach Billy Strickler switched his team to man-on-man coverage and held the Mustangs to just six points.
