AREA PREP FOOTBALL ACTION: Fourth-ranked Big Reds remain unbeaten

TAMA — What does being ranked fourth in Class 3A football bring you? An 8-0 overall record and at least a share of a conference title.

That’s what the Centerville Big Reds accomplished Friday night in Class 3A District 6 action with a 46-7 win over South Tama.

After jumping on South Tama with 21 first quarter points, the Big Reds showed zero signs of slowing up. Centerville took a 33-7 point led into half-time.

The powerful Big Red offense was able to move the pigskin over 500 yards on the evening.

The team was led by senior running back stand out Tanner Susin. Going into the game Susin was the third leading rusher in all of the state with just over 1,400 yards and 26 touchdowns through eight games of the season.

Susin added some impressive numbers to his already outstanding resume. He led all players with 225 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Tanner wasn’t the only Big Red running back to have a big night. Ethan Moorman rumbled for 89 yards and two touchdowns while Blake McPherren added a touchdown of his own. Quarterback Tyler Gray and receiver Jordan McCoy were able to sync up for the only passing touchdown for the night, Gray threw for 139 yards.

Centerville’s defense gave up a stingy 223 yards of total offense and one touchdown. The Big Reds also recorded seven sacks.

The defense was led by Mike England with 14 tackles. Ethan Moorman recorded 13 tackles including two sacks. Tanner Susin recorded 11 tackles and two sacks.

The Big Reds, who are 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the district, will travel to Chariton Friday. The win would clinch the district title for Centerville.

Comets lose, but still control own fate

WACO — The Cardinal Comets dropped to 4-4 after losing to WACO 48-0 in Class A District 5 action Friday night.

The Comets got off to a perfect 4-0 start this season for the first time since 1985, but Cardinal has now lost four games in as many weeks.

The Comets were led by senior quarterback Brandon Warren’s 41 yards on seven carries and 38 yards through the air. Austin O’Brien recorded 13 tackles to match his season average and lead the team. Josh Fuhs had nine tackles and forced a fumble for the Comets.

The loss drops Cardinal’s district record to 2-3. The Comets will need a victory next Friday night against Highland to secure a spot in postseason place.

Highland of Riverside is a team known for passing the football. The team has amassed nearly 1,000 yards through the air and nine touchdowns on the season. The good news — Highland hasn’t been able to win a game on the road this season.

The Comets’ secondary, led by both Jake Scherer and Tyler Goodell with two interceptions apiece — will have to rise to the occasion in order to ensure a playoff spot for the Comets.

If in fact the Comets are able to pull off a victory it will be the first time in school history that they will advance to postseason play.

Cardinal decides it’s own fate Friday at 7 p.m in Eldon.

Rockets down Wapello, 28-14

Eddyville — The Eddyville-Blakesburg Rockets, led by senior standout Jacob Batterson, downed Wapello 28-14 in Class 1A, District 5 football action Friday night.

Batterson led E-B, rushing for 135 yards on 24 carries with two touchdowns. Batterson remains in the top-15 rushers in Class 1A with over 800 yards gained during the season.

Senior quarterback Logan Alexander was 10-19 passing with two touchdowns and one interception. Alexander connected with both Sam Taylor and Blake Glenn for the scores. Taylor also recorded an interception for the Rockets. Alexander and Glenn have connected for touchdowns in two straight games. Last week Glenn had four receptions for 102 yards and a touchdown.

The win advances E-B to 5-1 in district play and 6-2 overall. The Rockets will take on Belle Plaine next Friday.

Tri-County remains undefeated

FARMINGTON — A 30-point third quarter helped lift the fourth-ranked Tri-County Trojans past Harmony 52-28 in Eight-Player, District 5 action Friday night.

The Trojans, who are now 4-0 in conference and 7-0 overall, take sole possesion of first place in the district with the victory.

Tri-County was led by Andy Thomas, who threw for three touchdowns and 232 yards on the night. Senior Colt Brumbaugh ran for 100 of the Trojans 132 yards.

Thomas also stood out on defense, leading the team with nine tackles and three sacks.

Going into the third quarter, the Trojans had a 22-point lead but completely closed the door after putting up 30 points alone in the stanza.

Ike Schimdt led all recievers with two receptions for 82 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown reception from Thomas.

OSKALOOSA — A strong fourth quarter by Mount Pleasant was too much for Oskaloosa to overcome as the Indians were dropped 35-19 in Class 3A District 5 action Friday night.

Mount Pleasant was able to get off to an early lead in the first quarter when Darren Cotton took back a kick return 80 yards. Quarterback Cody Vaugh was also able to score a touchdown in the opening quarter, leaving Oskaloosa in a 14-0 deficit.

Oskaloosa started a comeback in the second quarter when Austin Blanchard intercepted a pass and sprinted 26 yards down the field. The score brought Osky within one touchdown at the half.

Cotton once again found the end zone in the third quarter to seperate his team and Oskaloosa by two scores. Osky wouldn’t be down and out for long. Jordan Van Wyk caught a Vaugh pass and scampered down the field for 40-yard touchdown reception that kept the game within arm’s reach going into the fourth quarter.

Mount Pleasant scored two touchdowns in the fourth that proved too much for Oskaloosa to over-come dropping their record to 1-5 in conference and 1-7 overall. The win moved Mt Pleasant to 4-2, and 5-3 overall.
