MORAVIA —
The visiting Demons from Lamoni piled up 246 yards rushing in the first half and 278 for the game as they handed Moravia a 60-6 loss Friday night in Moravia.
The week zero game was obviously the opener for both squads. Moravia, who has good recent play-off success, took the field with a fairly young and inexperienced team. Moravia coach Denny Whitlow talked about the opener.
“When we were faced with the opening, we just looked for a game as a preseason game. It will help us to have an extra game before we open district play.”
Moravia stuffed the visitors on their first possession. The Mohawks looked to jump out on top as they recovered a Demon fumble at the Lamoni 12. They were unable to take advantage, as three running plays and an incomplete pass kept them out of the end zone.
“That was really frustrating to not score,” said Whitlow. “I was more disappointed that we seemed to come out with not much intensity on either side of the ball.”
Dodging the bullet early gave the visitors a chance to grab the momentum. They responded with a score on their next possession. Jacob Williams scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 21-yard run. Williams led the visitors with 162 yards rushing on just 17 carries.
Williams’s second score from 66 yards out put the visitors up 16-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Lamoni scored on their third consecutive possession as Daniel Ansong ran it in from 37 yards, to put the visitors up 24-0 early in the second.
Lamoni added one more score to lead 32-0 at the half.
The Mohawks were held to negative-25 yards rushing in the opening half. The lone bright spot for Moravia was the punting of Jon Eastlick. He had three punts just short of 50 yards.
Moravia opened the second half with one of its better drives. The seven-play drive didn’t end in a score, but it allowed the Mohawks to punt the visitors deep into their own territory. Dylan Conley had the first of his two fumble recoveries at the Demon five. Spenser Stufflebeam scored on the next play to get the Mohawks on the board.
Conley again recovered a Demon fumble to put the Mohawks in business at the visitors’ 16. A bad snap was responsible for killing the Moravia scoring chance.
Lamoni answered with a 38-yard touchdown pass from Jackson Carr to Caleb Heltenberg and the lead was 40-6. The Demons scored less than a minute later on a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Carr and Heltenberg hooked up for another score to close out the third quarter scoring.
Lamoni ended the game’s scoring with just over two minutes to play.
“We wanted to see where we were,” said Whitlow. “We will really stress the fundamentals of blocking and tackling in practice next week.”
Moravia will travel to Afton to take on East Union next Friday night.
