AREA BASEBALL ACTION: Eighth-ranked Mustangs clock Clarke

OSCEOLA — The eighth-ranked Davis County baseball team pulled a little bit closer to a South Central Conference crown Thursday with an impressive SCC sweep of Clarke.

The Mustangs, now 20-2 overall and a perfect 14-0 in the conference, bombed Clarke 21-1 in the first game and took a 4-0 win in the nightcap. The Mustangs are three games up on second-place Centerville (11-3) in the standings with just over a week of SCC play remaining.

The Davis County bats were crackling in support of Calvin Mathews in the first game, as Mathews earned the win on the mound. He allowed just one hit and walked no one while fanning 11 batters. The run charged to Mathews was unearned.

The Mustangs posted seven runs in the second inning and 13 more in the third. Coleton Mathews, Trevor Fowler and Austin Utt all had home runs, and Utt finished the night with six RBI while Coleton Mathews added four and Zach Fligg three. Josh Martsching was 4-for-5 with three doubles and three runs scored.

“Both of our pitchers threw well,” said Davis County coach Todd White.

The Mustangs will get back into action on Monday at Eddyville-Blakesburg. The two teams will conclude a suspended game before then playing a complete game.

CENTERVILLE — The Centerville Big Red baseball squad wasted little time in wiping their memory clean.

Centerville scored all of its runs of the opener in the first three innings.

Huisman talked about the bad outing versus Southeast Warren and what needed to be done back in league play to get rolling again.

“We had to let out a little of our frustration. The best way to do that is hit the ball hard,” said Huisman.
