WASHINGTON — The youthful Ottumwa girls basketball team took some more knocks Friday night, as the Bulldogs were handed a 49-27 loss at Washington.
Ottumwa dropped a 58-20 game to 11th-ranked Ankeny on Tuesday to open the season, as the Bulldogs are learning on the job under head coach Stan Rupe after losing 90 percent of their scoring from a season ago.
“There’s a lot of teaching going on,” said Rupe. “We’ll get better. We saw some improvement tonight and we’ll just have to continue to learn and improve.”
Ottumwa, now 0-2, will get back on the road on Tuesday as they travel to Mount Pleasant. That game will kick off a busy week, as Ottumwa travels to Southeast Polk on Friday before hosting Fairfield next Saturday.
“We’re just so young right now, we have no margin of error on either end of the floor,” said Rupe. “Defensively I thought we played pretty good at times. We can build on that.”
Kelsey Nickerson led Ottumwa with eight points on Friday, while Amy Albertson had seven. Each hit a 3-point basket for Ottumwa. The Bulldogs led 7-6 after one quarter, but Washington outscored Ottumwa the rest of the way, taking a 21-16 halftime lead. Although the Bulldogs closed the gap in the third, a big Washington run to end the quarter extended into the final quarter and put the game out of reach.
Lucy Libe led Washington with 15 points while Tonie Thornton added eight.
Rachel Hinebaugh cleared seven rebounds to lead Ottumwa in the paint, while Nickerson and Albertson led Ottumwa with four steals each.
“We’re trying to set a foundation here,” said Rupe. “It’s going to take some time. We just need to stay positive and continue to work hard.”
