DES MOINES —
Alexis Winn’s 11 points proved to not be enough to garner the Ottumwa girls basketball team a win Friday, as the Bulldogs fell in a heartbreaker to Des Moines Lincoln, 40-38.
Megan Black complemented Winn’s scoring effort by pulling down a team-high 12 rebounds, dishing out four assists and getting four steals.
“In the second half her {Black’s} rebounds and Alexis’ points kept us in the game,” Ottumwa coach Kevin Patterson said.
Turnovers were Ottumwa’s albatross, as the Bulldogs turned it over 25 times. Ottumwa also missed some high-percentage shots as well as some free throws in the final two minutes of regulation, Patterson said. Patterson, however, said he thought his team still would have been able to escape with a victory if they had played solid defense for all four quarters.
“We’re not in that position if we defend in the third quarter,” he said. “If we played defense in the third quarter, we’re shooting those free throws to ice the game instead of trying to come from behind.”
Olivia Roark scored seven points, including burying Ottumwa’s only two 3-pointers of the contest, and Sydney Strunk added six. Hayli Beeson and Devin Leffler had four points each.
Ottumwa (2-11, 1-4) plays today at Des Moines North in CIML Metro Conference action.
