THORNBURG —
Albia’s Brett Leshen and Tri-County/Montezuma’s Tyler Foubert may share the top of the podium at the state wrestling tournament by the time this season ends.
On Tuesday night, the two shared center stage in a battle of unbeaten top-five area juniors. In the end, the third-ranked 2A Blue Demon star edged the Trojans’ 1A top-ranked grappler as Brett Leshen outpointed Tyler Foubert, 8-5, in the highlight of a perfect night as Albia beat Cardinal (54-18), Sigourney (44-20) and the host Trojans (51-24).
Leshen also joined Hugh Sinclair in picking up a pair of pins, falling Cardinal’s Kayvin Johnson in 51 seconds before scoring a pin in 2:54 against Sigourney’s Gage Greiner. Other Albia wrestlers scoring a pair of pins on the night included third-ranked 120-pound junior Shadow Leshen and fifth-ranked 126-pound freshman Bryce Leshen.
Jacob Weber scored TCM’s only fall against Albia, pinning Christian Summers in the first period of their 182-pound match. Cardinal got a win from Josh Ramos at 170 pounds over Joseph Sager with a fall at 3:29.
TCM bounced back to beat Cardinal, 58-6 and avenged a SICL loss to Sigourney with a 46-36 win over the Savages. Foubert (35-1) added a pin against Cardinal’s Johnson in 1:10 while Ramos scored a fall in the final second of the opening period for the Comets against TCM’s Weber.
No. 7 (2A) Albia (18-5) joins South Central Conference rival Davis County and Pleasantville at Central Decatur while Cardinal (1-13) and SEISC North rival West Burlington-Notre Dame head to Mediapolis on Thursday. TCM (14-7, 5-3) wrestles at the North Tama Invitational on Saturday while Sigourney (12-3, 7-2) hosts Pekin in a dual meet on Monday.
