Another victory for the girls, a painful defeat for the boys.
That about sums up the Ottumwa bowling teams duals against Des Moines East Monday at Champion Bowl. The Bulldog girls remained perfect with an easy 2,981-1,844 victory over Des Moines East, while the boys, despite a valiant effort (they posted their highest team score of the season); fell to the Scarlets, 3,194-1,324.
“Our goal today was 3,000 or better,” Ottumwa girls coach Doug Techel said. “After our first round we knew we had to average about 220 in the Baker games and we were right on pace the first four and we just didn’t throw enough strikes in the last game. But we will take 2,981 any day of the year.”
Lynissa Lasley led the Bulldog juggernaut, as she bowled an average of 218, rolling a 216 in her first game and a 220 in her second. Bulldog Michaela Malloy followed her with an average of 214. She bowled a team-best 226 in her first game and a 202 in the second.
“Both Lynissa and Michaela bowled really good today,” Techel said. “Whenever you can average 218 and 214 with a couple of bowlers that’s what you aim for.”
Other girls averages included Sydney Swallow (184), Bailey Palmer (174), Sadie Shaw (166), Cybil Lennie (150).
Braxton Coble led the boys with an average of 226 and Joey Lee followed closely behind with 223.5. Rounding out things for the Bulldogs were Isaac Goodman (220), Anthony Roberts (218), Austin Palmer (178) and Brandon Six (169.5).
Far from being despondent, boys coach Brett Salter, was pleased by the strides he saw his team make.
“We’re looking at it as a meet where we really grew as a team to get where we need to be,” he said. “Mentally, that was the best meet we bowled. There’s nothing you can really say [to the boys] to make it any easier, but we’re going to use it for motivation to get a little better and realize that it takes every game in a meet to win the meet.
“They bowled a great score to beat us in the end and you can’t take that away from them, but we’re happy with our score.”
The girls junior varsity bowling team, led by Courtney Smith, who rolled a 158 average, steamrolled the Scarlets 2,342-1,324. The boys junior varsity team topped DM East 2,832-2,363. Ryan Hagist led boys, as he bowled an average of 227.5.
The Ottumwa girls (7-0) and boys (4-3) teams host Johnston Monday at Champion Bowl.
