OTTUMWA —
The Ottumwa cross country teams had the opportunity to run against some of the top runners in the state Thursday at the Indianola Invitational.
“We were running against the best in the state here tonight,” coach Jeff Smith said. “You just can’t go anywhere else and see competition like we saw tonight.”
When all was said and done, the Bulldog girls took 12th out of 14 teams and the boys finished 14th out of 16 teams.
Cody McConnell finished first among Bulldog runners and 15th overall with a time of 17:35 and Daylin Latham placed highest on the Ottumwa girls’ squad with a time of 16:25.
Smith said he thought McConnell was not fully recovered from an illness that had sidelined him for two weeks.
For the boys, Charlie Altfillisch claimed 51st place with 17:41 and Collin McConnell placed 90th with 18:59.
“Charlie has been pretty consistent all year long,” Smith said. “I think Collin McConnell ran very well.”
Coming in second among the Bulldog girls and 59th overall was Caroline Owens, who finished the race in 17:24. Ashlyn Thompson completed the race in 17:53 and claimed 75th and Charlette Flanders took 78th with 17:55.
Ottumwa girls coach Angela Berry mentioned that the official times seemed to be off by quite a bit. For example, she said Latham said she finished the race in 16:25 instead of 17:01.
“I was really proud of the girls,” Berry said. “I thought they did a really good job tonight.
“Once the race started you just knew the pace was faster than it what they’re used to and you just have to pick it up. It was a really good experience for them,” Berry added.
The Ottumwa cross country teams run at the Iowa City Invitational Thursday.
