Ottumwa 13-year old Babe Ruth squad crowned state’s best
HILLS — The Ottumwa Babe Ruth 13-year old baseball took home a state championship last Thursday night in Hills.
The Ottumwa squad, managed by Rich Kennedy, solidified its state title with a 3-0 win over Rathbun Area.
The Ottumwa team represents Iowa in the Midwest Regional Babe Ruth All-Star Tournament in Burlington on Aug. 7-12. Ottumwa will face state champions from Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota.
Ottumwa pitchers Spencer Nelson, Jake Black and Chris Peden combined with a stout defense for the championship shutout. Black and Cooper Smith were honored with game MVP honors. Blake Mooney was 2-3 with an RBI in the title game.
Ottumwa also defeated Tri-County 15-6 on July 18, Boone 9-6 a day later and Newton 8-1 on July 20.
J.P Watts was 2-4 with four RBI against Tri-County. Cody Miller went 2-4 with two RBI versus Boone. Black pitched five-scoreless innings against Newton and Spencer Fuller was 1-3 with two RBI.
