OTTUMWA —
The Davis County Mustangs used their depth and determination to take the wrestling title Saturday at the Class 2A Sectional at Centerville.
The Mustangs advanced seven individual wrestlers to next weekend’s district round and edged Albia for the team crown. Davis County finished with 206 team points, just barely getting past South Central Conference rival Albia, who scored 197.5. Centerville placed third as a team with 152 team points. Albia and Centerville each adavanced six wrestlers to next Saturday’s district tournament at Monroe.
Both Davis County and Albia, as the first and second place teams at sectionals, will advance to the Class 2A Regional Duals at Leon on Tuesday. Davis County will take on Winterset while Albia will go up against Creston, with the winning teams facing each other.
In the Class 2A Sectional Tournament at Clear Creek, the Fairfield Trojans placed third as a team with 188 team points, behind first place Williamsburg (229) and second-place Washington (216.5). Fairfield advanced six wrestlers to districts, which the Trojans will host next Saturday.
Advancing to district competition for Davis County as sectional champs were Dakota Schutter at 126 pounds, Dillon Newton at 132 and Clint Foster at 182. Mustangs advancing as runners-up included Kody Smith (106), Logan Boas (160), Jeremiah Garber (145) and Colton Boas (HWT).

All 12 Albia wrestlers who competed finished in the top four, with 6 district qualifiers, The Blue Demons had five third place finishers and one fourth place finisher.
For Centerville, sectional champs included Garrett Owens (106), Eric Repasz (120), Richard England (170) and Riley Denny (195). Tyler Walker (138) and Bradley Irwin (126) advanced to districts as runners-up.
