OTTUMWA —
All over the state of Iowa, some hearts will be broken and some Cinderella teams will prepare to head to the dance, starting tonight.
The basketball postseason officially gets under way this evening, as area and Iowa girls basketball teams will open play.
Locally, in Class 1A, Region 6 play, Moravia (10-9) will host Wayne (6-15) while Bluegrass Conference champion Moulton-Udell (14-4) will host Seymour (0-13). The winners of those two games will square off against each other in the next round on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
Moulton-Udell, who claimed the Bluegrass regular season crown for the fist time in school history, has rolled over Seymour twice already this season by lopsided scores of 60-23 back in November and 71-14 in January.
M-U features three players who average double figures in scoring, junior Natalie Potter (15.3) and seniors Madison Probasco (12.7) and Kadarenna Sales (11.3). The Eagles also own the boards, with four players averaging over five rebounds per game, led by sophomore Toni Clark (9.3).
Moravia looks to be headed on a collision course with rival M-U next week. Junior Katelynn Tracy leads the Mohawks at 15.5 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. Mckenzie Smith leads Moravia in assists and steals.
Although M-U won the regular season title outright, Twin Cedars won the Bluegrass Conference Tournament, defeating Moulton-Udell 67-62 in overtime in the tourney finals. The Sabers (16-5) take on Melcher-Dallas (9-12) tonight. The winner takes on the winner between Southeast Warren (5-16) and Lynnville-Sully (19-2). Fourth-ranked Lynnville-Sully’s only two losses are to top-ranked North Mahaska, one by just three points and the other by just four points.
Junior Alee Hugen leads Twin Cedars with 17.7 points per game while sophomore Brittney Roby posts 10.3. Hugen also hauls in nearly 10 rebounds per game while Roby leads the Sabers in assists and steals.
Also in Region 6, Tri-County (1-20) is at Sigourney (4-17) tonight. Tri-County’s only win this season is a 47-42 victory over Sigourney last week. Sigourney defeated Tri-County 62-48 in action earlier this season.
The winner will play the winner between WACO (7-14) and Winfield-Mount Union (16-5) on Feb. 14.
Top-ranked and unbeaten North Mahaska (21-0) is the top seed in Class 1A, Region 5. The Warhawks, who will host HLV (6-14) tonight, are led by the balanced offensive attack of seniors Tara Smith and Kate Ray and junior Mallory Boyle. The three combine for 35 points and 12 rebounds per game. Senior Hannah Ferguson distributes the wealth and leads the Warhawks in assists.
North Mahaska advanced to the state tournament last season and lost in a first-round heartbreaker to Marquette, 34-32. The Warhawks rolled through the regional, taking wins over Twin Cedars, Moulton-Udell, Keota and Lone Tree to advance to state.
HLV lost to North Mahaska twice during the regular season by lopsided scores of 73-25 and 58-33. The winner will play the winner between English Valleys (8-13) and Montezuma (12-10) on Tuesday, Feb. 14. North Mahaska has taken blowout wins over both of those teams twice this season.
All regional games tonight are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
