Mustangs, Redettes advance to regionals

OTTUMWA — The Davis County and Centerville girls golf teams kept their seasons alive for at least one more week on Monday, as both claimed second-place finishes at their district meets.

Centerville placed second at the Class 3A district meet at Grinnell Country Club. The Redettes were led by Maddison Lang, who carded 93 and qualified for regionals as an individual. Centerville shot a team score of 404, second only to host Grinnell, which won the meet with an amazing 330. The top two teams at districts advance to the regional. The four lowest individual scores were all shot by golfers from Grinnell.

Centerville will compete at the Class 3A regional at Stone Creek Golf Course in Williamsburg next Monday.

The Mustangs placed second at the Class 2A district held at Cedarcrest Golf and Country Club in Columbus Junction. Led by Alexa Owen’s 101, Davis County posted a team score of 446, second only to Wapello’s 369. Leah Rushman shot 112 for Davis County, while Cayle Boatman carded 117 and Skylar Yahnke 118.  Payton Hughes of Van Buren qualified as an individual at the meet with a 98.

That Class 2A regional will be held at West Liberty Country Club next Monday. The other Class 2A regional, held at Pine Lake Country Club near Eldora, will feature Albia’s Cassie Crall, who carded 93 to qualify for regionals as an individual at the 2A district held Lincoln Valley Golf Course near State Center.

Crall’s Lady Dees came just eight shots short of qualifying as a team, as Albia shot 401 as a team while host West Marshall finished at 393. PCM won the meet with a 381.

In Class 1A, North Mahaska qualified as a team while Moravia’s Shaye Brewer advanced to regionals as an individual.

The Warhawks were led by Kate Ray’s regional-qualifying round of 86, as North Mahaska finished second at the 1A district held at Diamond Trail Golf Club in Lynnville. North Mahaska shot 398 while Lynnville-Sully won the meet with a team score of 354. Brewer shot 91 for Moravia, which finished sixth as a team. Brewer and North Mahaska will compete in districts at Indian Hills Golf and Country Club at Wapello.
