Ottumwa swimmers dominate dual with Fairfield

OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa girls swim team dominated its season-opening dual against Fairfield Tuesday at The Beach Ottumwa, trouncing the Trojans, 150-43.

“I don’t know how you can’t walk away from this being pretty pleased,” coach Stephanie Mishler said. “The outcome we saw tonight was what we were aiming for.”

Ottumwa’s impressive performance was bolstered by an array of swimmers. Claire and Caroline Carlson combined for seven No. 1 finishes and Danielle Noe finished first in four events.

Noe took first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 29.31 and the 100-yard freestyle with 1:07.85. Noe, Hannah Wolver, Caroline Carlson and Claire Carlson took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with 1:59.21.

Noe also teamed with Marissa and Maranda Rupalo and Caroline Carlson to take first in the 200-yard medley with a time of 2:14.18.

Claire Carlson kicked off her season by placing first in the 100-yard butterfly with 1:10.46 and she took first in the 100-yard backstroke. Claire said getting that first dual victory was important for her team.

“We have a very hard competition season this year with a lot of bigger teams,” she said. “So it’s good to compete with someone around our size.”

Claire Carlson said she was surprised with the level of success she achieved at the dual.

“I was concentrating and then I looked at the board and I was like, ‘Oh, I got first,’” she said.

Claire, Marissa and Maranda Rupalo and Wolver came in first in the 400-yard relay with 4:36.90.

Caroline Carlson came in first in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breastroke. She, along with Claire Carlson, Noe and Wolver also finished first in the 200-yard relay with 1:59.21 and she teamed with the Rupalo’s and Noe to take first in the 200-yard varsity relay.

“I know last year it started them off well so I think it will be good for the team. A win is always good,” said senior Darby Patritto, who is out for swimming for the first time. “I think we were all a little jittery and I think we were ready to see how the meet went.”

The girls face Ankeny in a dual Thursday at The Beach Ottumwa.
