Warriors get elusive win at Iowa Lakes

ESTHERVILLE — Lyndsey Lyon has been trying for years to beat the Iowa Lakes volleyball team.

Tuesday night, the first-year Indian Hills head coach finally got that long-awaited victory. IHCC picked up an impressive early-season sweep over the Lakers, winning by scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-12.

“I never beat them as a player and I never beat them as a head coach at Ellsworth,” said Lyon, who also watched Iowa Lakes beat IHCC twice as an assistant coach last year. “It’s nice to finally say I have a win against them.”

The Warriors served the ball well, committing just six errors on 81 serves while collecting 13 aces. Emily Eswonia led IHCC, going 18-19 from the service line while also leading the Warriors in hitting with a 12-15 effort at the net that included six kills.

“We came out a little bit flat. Both teams really kind of had a lot of early mistakes,” Lyon said. “We did a good job cleaning our mistakes up earlier. It’s nice to see our girls really stepping up at the net and putting the ball away.”

Carla Novaes led IHCC with 14 digs, just one better then sophomore teammate Jessi Black. Cristaine Vosconcoles added a team-best five blocks for the 4-1 Warriors, who will take a three-match winning streak into more tough weekend tournament action Friday at the Lincoln Land Tournament in Illinois.

“There are going to be a lot of great teams, including Lakeland. We may see them with a national tournament berth on the line,” Lyon said. “It’s always great competition at that tournament. It’s a long trip, we just have to ready to go when we get off the bus.”
