A number of area athletes were awarded by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association with all-state selections.
Oskaloosa standout Kena Veldhuizen, who was the area’s leading scorer with about 20 points a game, was named to first team Class 4A all-state.
Veldhuizen was at the forefront of her team’s defensive efforts with a team-high 109 steals. In addition, she also handed out a team-best 89 assists and knocked down a team-best 32 3-pointers. Veldhuizen has racked up her share of accolades this offseason, as she also was named to the Class 4A all-state second team by the Iowa Newspaper Association and to the Southeast District team.
Van Buren’s Hannah Haynes made the Class 2A all-state second team. The star Warrior poured in about 19.3 points a game and swatted an otherworldly 134 shots. Haynes maximized her offensive opportunities with a shooting percentage of 54.3 percent. Haynes recorded a team-best 96 steals and corralled 12.4 rebounds.
She also was selected for the Class 2A Southeast all-district team. Alee Hugen of Twin Cedars was selected for the Class 1A all-state second team. Hugen’s 19 points a game helped the Sabers cultivate their 21-4 record and get within a win of the school’s first state tournament. She also earned a selection to the Class 1A South all-district team.
Sidney Baumann of Fairfield poured in about 18 points a game and snared a spot on the Class 4A all-state third team. Baumann turned in two excellent performances — she combined for 51 points — to lead Fairfield to two road wins that brought the Trojans within one win of the state tourney. In addition, she tossed in a team-best 54 3-pointers, sank a team-high 107 free throws, dished out 64 assists and recorded 62 steals.
Katelynn Tracy, who led Moravia with 18 points per game, made the Class 1A all-state third team. Tracy averaged an incredible 55.5 percent from the field and led the area in rebounds with 14.4 boards a game. Tracy also was named to the Class South all-district team.
