Boyer headed to nationals: Former EBF grappler to represent Coe at NCAA DIII Tourney

CEDAR RAPIDS — Former Eddyvile-Blakesburg-Fremont wrestling star Dimitri Boyer continues to enjoy success on the mat more than four years after his distinguished career with the Rockets ended with him taking home his second state championship.

Boyer, who is now a junior at Coe College, earned his first berth to the NCAA Nationals last Saturday at the NCAA Central Regional in Dubuque. The former Rocket juggernaut punched his ticket to Nationals by going 3-1 and placing third in the 157 weight class.

After a first round bye, Boyer, who went into regionals as a third seed, toppled his next opponent 9-3 in the regional quarterfinals. He fell to second-seeded Ryan Warczynski 3-2 in the regional semifinals, but bounced back to pin Cornell’s Daniel Klema in 2:28. Then, in the match to decide third place, Boyer blanked Central’s Joseph Atwell 6-0.

Boyer will enter the NCAA National Wrestling Championships on March 15-16 at Cedar Rapids boasting a 23-7 record. He said the transition from high school to college has taken some adjustment.

“It’s a big jump,” Boyer said. “Everybody is just a lot tougher so there are no easy matches. It’s always going to be a battle.”

Boyer has made strides as a wrestler since he ran roughshod over his competition at E-B-F.

“I made a lot of gains in wrestling on my feet,” he said.

Boyer was a busy guy during his time at E-B-F. When he wasn’t dominating his opponents on the mat, he was playing baseball, football  or track and field. Aside from winning back-to-back state wrestling championships in his final two years as a Rocket, Boyer also placed fourth at state as a freshman and sophomore.
