Walker medalist as linksters open season

INDIANOLA — The Scott Maas era got off to a positive start thanks to the exploits of Matt Walker and company at the Ottumwa boys golf team’s season opener Monday at Indianola Country Club.

Walker took first with a round of 70 — one under par — and the Bulldogs tied for second with Ankeny with a score of 305 — just two strokes off Southeast Polk’s 303.

“We are pleased with the outcome,” Maas, who took over the reins of the program after long time coach Mike Cardin retired this year, said. “It was a good start to the season. We finished tied for second with some good teams on a good course.”

The coach said Walker’s golf game lacks any weaknesses.

“He drives well, he hits his irons well and he’s good around the green,” Maas said.

Aside from Walker, the first-year Bulldog coach also had words of praise for senior golfer Joe Wetrich, who finished fifth with a round of 75. Maas referred to Wetrich’s score as “really solid.”

In addition, the coach said Wetrich had established himself as a leader of the golf squad.

“Joe is one of the team leaders and I think the younger kids look up to Joe,” Maas said. “He gave the younger kids the scouting report on the course.”

Anthony Roberts and Hoyt Grooms both shot an 80, Dillon Patritto finished with an 86 and Jacob Gardner shot an 87.

The Ottumwa junior varsity team took fifth at the jv invite at the Indianola Country Club with a total score of 356. Braxton Coble shot a round of 80. Ankeny took first with a score of 326.

The Bulldogs hit the links again Thursday at the first round of the CIML Metro Championship at Grandview Golf Course.
