A number of area middle school cross country teams competed in the 18th Washburn Classic Saturday hosted by Saydel High School.
The Davis County eighth grade boys team finished atop the pack among 2A schools with 22 points: four ahead of its nearest competitor.
Trenton Goode paced the Mustangs by taking third place with a time of 13:18. Davis County’s score also was bolstered by Logan Faler, who finished fifth with 13:25 and Doug Turner, who took sixth with 13:30. In addition, Davis County’s Patrick McDougall finished eighth with 14:33 and Zach Houf claimed 12th with 15:49.
Ben Huftalin of Osage posted the top individual time of 12:35.
The Mustangs seventh grade girls finished fourth out of four teams. Macayla Moore finished first among her teammates and eighth overall with 15:08. She was followed by Jasmine Harvey, who took 11th with 16:03 and Rebekah Settles finished 13th with 16:09. Camille Cook claimed 16th, Kirsten Rook snagged 17th and Brianna Carroll came in 18th.
Pekin’s eighth grade boy’s team finished second out of eight teams in the Class 1A meet with 48 points. The Panthers’ score was buoyed by Malcom Myers second place finish (13:10) and Ryan Millikin’s seventh place finish (13:38). Besides that, Sam Roth finished 15th with 14:13, Nate Kielkoph came in 24th with 14:47, Jared Horras placed 32nd with 15:58, Cameron Little claimed 35th with 16:44 and Hunter Weinhold took 48th.
West Fork finished first with 43, Sigourney placed seventh with 85 and North Mahaska took eighth with 92.
For the Savages, Tyler Crawford took fourth with 13:25 and Will Flaengin snagged 19th with 14:32. Zane Kracht came in 29th with 15:10, Luke House placed 33rd, Avery Moore claimed 34th, and Eric Meiners finished 36th.
Andrew Goematt took first among North Mahaska runners; he finished 13th overall with 14:05. He was directly followed by Jac Munson, who claimed 14th with 14:06. Chris Kubli finished 27th and Landon Playle snagged 38th.
The Panthers eighth grade girls team took second out of five teams with 35 points. Pekin’s score was bolstered by Shae Dahlstrom’s first place finish. Dahlstrom posted a time of 13:29; five seconds faster than her closest competitor. Finishing second among the Panthers was Bonnie Becker, who grabbed seventh place with 14:51. Chelsey Lamphier took 12th with 15:54, Taylor Reynolds came in 15th, Kaylee Linder finished 20th and Madison Fears claimed 23rd.
Pekin’s seventh grade girls team placed third out of three teams. Hailey Bean finished first among the Panthers and fifth overall with 16:17 in the race. Rosemarie Cooley came in eighth with 16:58, Anotnia Garcia grabbed 10th and Jordan Earnest claimed 11th. Mackenzie Manley came in 15th and Kodi Dailey took 17th.
The Ottumwa eighth grade boys took 11th out of 15 teams with 186 in Class 4A action. Dalton Bowers was the first Bulldog to complete the race; he finished 13th overall with 12:28. He was followed by Roger Cruz, who took 47th with 13:42 and Jenelson Lopez, who claimed 54th with 14:06. Rayce Elliot placed 72nd with 15:17 and Christian Buffington came in 78th with 16:22.
Dowling took first overall with 40 points and Linn Mar’s Ryan Murphy posted the top individual time of 11:19.
The Ottumwa boys seventh grade team claimed seventh out of 12 teams. Conner Riley finished first among the Bulldogs and ninth overall with a time of 12:57. He was followed by Drew Riley, who took 26th with 13:43 and Carlos Moralez, who claimed 79th with 15:46. Bulldog Anthony Hamm took 82nd with 16:12.
Muscatine took first overall with 42 points and, rather appropriately, Tyler Olson of Muscatine placed first overall with a time of 12:11.
The Ottumwa eighth grade girls team finished last out of 12 teams with 218. Coming in first for the Bulldogs and 37th overall was Samantha McCoy with 14:42. Morgan Zesiger claimed 55th with 15:55, Ellen Carlson took 62nd with 17:21 and Alyssa Noe placed 64th with 18:04.
Ottumwa’s Delay Throckmortan took ninth out of 76 runners among seventh grade girls with 14:27 and Hailee LaPoint claimed 74th with 20:05.
