Davis County wins ‘Pennant Game’, 43-7

BLOOMFIELD — In one of the biggest rivalry games of each season, the Mustangs of Davis County struck early and often in each half, to down Centerville 43-7 Friday night in non-district football action in Blomfield.

After graduating a lot of good seniors from their playoff team of last season, the Mustangs just brought the next guy in and didn’t miss a beat. They would have a 424-227 margin in total offense in the victory.

One of the groups that best exemplified the new guys stepping up, was the Mustang line. They controlled play on both sides of the ball.

Each coach commented on the play of the Davis County line.

“It was really a nice surprise to play that well,” said Mustang co-coach Todd White. “We really played hard.”

Centerville coach Chuck Evans had this to say.

“We were disappointed in how we got handled but they have good size and are quick off the ball.”

Davis County scored on their first three possessions to go up 22-0. The Mustangs using a familiar offense (with just a few new wrinkles) rushed the ball for over 100 yards in those possessions. The running game opened up the passing game and quarterback Calvin Utt threw three touchdown passes for the early scores.

“Last year really gave me good experience and I feel like I read defenses a lot better,” said Utt. “Our play action helps get guys open.”

The first score came at the middle of the opening quarter. Utt hit Damen Dixon on a 20-yard scoring strike. With less than a minute gone in quarter number two, Utt and Dixon teamed up again on a 16 yarder.

Utt’s third scoring pass went to Park Mikels from 13 yards out.

The visitors got on the board late in the half. Michael Starcevich found tight end Logan Brown deep behind the Mustang defense to hook up on a 79-yard scoring pass. The play could have given Centerville momentum going into the final half, but the Mustangs quickly put an end to any thoughts of a Big Red comeback.

As in the opening quarter, Davis County scored on their first three possessions of the second half. Colten Roberts and Utt continued to pile up the rushing yards and each would have a touchdown run in the third quarter. Roberts, who led the Mustangs with 127 yards rushing, scored on a three-yard run to put the Mustangs up 29-7.

“I’m basically a guy that runs inside and it’s great that our offense isn’t much different this year,” said Roberts. “Our line did a great job.”

Utt, who was just short of a 100 yard rushing game (96) added the second score of the third on a four yard run.

“We have shown flashes of this type of play in practice but tonight we were consistent with our execution,” said DC co-coach Joe Rasmussen. “When something is working, I kind of just stick with it.”

Dixon’s third touchdown reception ended the scoring and triggered the continual clock with just over two minutes left in the third. The Utt to Dixon connection was for 21 yards.

“I try and break my route away from coverage,” said Dixon. “I try and use my speed to make quick cuts.”

The rebuilding Big Reds of Centerville will host Albia next week and Davis County travels to Fairfield.
