MARSHALLTOWN —
The Ottumwa boys golf team came away with the title Friday in action at Marshalltown’s Joe August Invitational at Elmwood Country Club.
The Bulldogs posted a team score of 306, two shots better than second-place Ankeny at the nine-team tourney. Des Moines Roosevelt and Ames tied for third at 316, two shots better than Newton’s 318.
Matthew Walker carded 73 to pace Ottumwa, earning him meet runner-up medalist honors, tied with Andrew Huseman of Ankeny. Roosevelt’s Aaron Wirt was medalist with a 72.
“I felt good out there today,” said Walker. “I hit the ball well and made a couple putts.”
Three other Bulldogs broke 80 on the par-70 course. Braxton Coble shot 75 while Joe Wetrich and Hoyt Grooms each shot 79.
Jacob Gardner carded 85 and Dillon Patritto shot 87 to round out the Bulldog scoring.
“Ankeny is a good team,” said Walker. “To come out on top of them means a lot. As a team, we’re starting to come around. We are staying consistent, that’s the main thing.”
Ottumwa will get back into action on Monday at the Burlington Invitational, held at Flint Hills.
