DES MOINES —
It appeared to be the same old story for the 18th-ranked (DI) Indian Hills volleyball team on Tuesday night.
Third-ranked (DII) DMACC had a new ending in place for the Warriors.
After sweeping a three-game match Friday at the Kirkwood Tournament over the Bears, IHCC appeared on their way to another repeat effort after winning the first two games in Boone on Tuesday 25-20 and 25-13. A lineup adjustment by the Bears and several late errors by the Warriors, however, changed the ending to the day dramatically as IHCC lost their 2-0 lead in the match, a match point late in decisive game five and fell in a long heartbreaker as the Bears gained their revenge with a 20-25, 13-25, 25-17, 25-20, 17-15 win.
“It was a very aggressive match from both sides. They were definitely out for blood after we beat them on Friday,” Warriors head coach Lyndsey Lyon said. “They did their homework, so did we, but we just weren’t able to execute.”
“We shared the lead quite a bit in that final game. We had a chance to win it at 15-14, but we couldn’t quite put it away.”
Carla Novaes led the Warrior attack at the net, nailing a team-best 14 kills on 28-31 hitting. Former Ottumwa Bulldog Peyton Crosser added eight of IHCC’s 22 blocks on defense as the Warriors couldn’t find their rhythm in the final three games after DMACC made a change to their lineup after falling behind 2-0 in the match.
“They moved some players around in the third game and couldn’t defend against that,” Lyon said. “We also gave up a lot of unearned points in the final game. We had great, intense moments, but it just wasn’t our night.”
Sophomore Jessi Black came up big in the back row as the Ottumwa native dug out 23 balls. Kassidy Guiham added a 17-19 serving night while Cristaine Vosconcoles had a team-high five aces for the 18th-ranked (DI) Warriors (12-3), who host another top in-state rival in No. 8 (DII) Kirkwood Thursday night at 7 p.m.
Lyon does not expect any hangover after letting a possible sweep of DMACC get away.
“It was put away in the locker room. We were already discussing Kirkwood,” Lyon said. “We’ll be ready to play on Thursday.”
