OTTUMWA —
Sophomore Jameel McKay led a balanced scoring effort for sixth-ranked Indian Hills in rout to a non-regional victory over Moberly Area on Tuesday. McKay was one of five Warriors to score in double figures as a late run to close out the first half helped IHCC pull away early in a 94-81 win over the Greyhounds at the Hellyer Student Life Center.
“You look at the final numbers and we had 21 assists and nine different players that scored. That's what we should look like every night,” IHCC head coach Barret Peery said.
Just three nights removed from sinking a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to help IHCC escape with a win at Marshalltown, Ronald Ross continued his hot shooting from the outside. The former Vincennes star was 4-7 from beyond the arc and joined fellow sophomore transfer Jelan Kendrick with 16 points in the Warriors’ season-best eighth straight win.
Mike Anderson had a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double to lead visiting Moberly Area. Both teams struggled early on from the field as Moberly Area missed their first nine shots from the field before pulling within two on several occassions in the first half.
IHCC used their defense to score the decisive run of the night, collecting four steals that led to four layups during a 23-5 run to close out the first half after the Greyhounds pulled with two at 24-22.
“Our guys have done a good job of scoring off stops. They do a good job scoring when we get the numbers going the other way,” Peery added.
Brennen Hughes added 18 points, including the final lay-up that got Moberly Area (18-5) as close 13 with 38 seconds to play after IHCC opened their lead out to 72-48 midway through the second half. Dustin Hogue added 15 points for the 22-2 Warriors while Frank Williams poured in 10.
No. 6 (DI) IHCC begins the second half of Region XI play on Saturday night at the Hellyer Center. The 4-0 region-leading Warriors host Nebraska's regional newcomer, Northeast, for “Maroon Night” at 7 p.m.
